Ulster & Ireland Past Players

The Academy has three Ireland internationals as past pupils: 

Wing Tyrone Howe who gained 14 caps, and also represented The British & Irish Lions in Australia in 2001 as well as gaining over 100 Ulster caps and several Barbarian appearances.

– Hooker John McDonald gained 4 Irish caps including playing in the inaugural World Cup in 1985 and represented Ulster on numerous occasions.

– Scrum Half Herbert McCracken who gained 3 Ireland caps in the 1950s as well as being a regular Ulster player.

Another past pupil of distinction is Centre Bill Harbinson who represented Ulster many times back in their halcyon days of the 80s. Also Michael Daly gained 3 Ulster caps in 1990 playing in the centre.

Scrum Half Ian Porter played numerous times for ulster over 4 seasons and also had two seasons with Connaught Rugby. Ian also played for the Ireland U21 side for two seasons. Prop Jonathon Simpson represented Ulster from 2014-2017 and played many games during his time while 2nd Row Alexander Thompson played for the Ulster Academy and played professional rugby for Jersey in the English Championship.

Most recently the 2019-20 1st XV Captain Prop Adam Hanna represented Ulster ‘A’ while he was still at school.
