Burney victory

Banbridge Academy Boys’ Hockey 1st XI are through to the quarter-finals of the John Minnis Estate Agents Burney Cup after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Friends’ School.  The Lisburn school arrived at Havelock Park having defeated the Academy three times already this season but they met a side who were definitely up-for-the-cup.

The Academy side, supported by Prentice Cars and Sinton’s at the Bridge, started the game strongly and went in front after just five minutes.  After the midfield stole the ball, it was quickly released to Luke McConnell who slotted the ball past the advancing Friends’ keeper to the delight of the large home support.  Friends’ couldn’t get their renowned passing game to flow and the Academy defence easily snuffed out any attacks.  Midway through the half Edward Rowe doubled the home side’s lead with a low drag from a penalty corner.  The Academy were comfortably in control of the game but some poor tackling in defence saw Friends’ pull a goal back from a great solo effort giving goalkeeper Scott Dale no chance.

The second half saw Friends’ come out fighting.  The Academy seemed to be dealing well with the pressure until a defence slip-up saw a breakaway equaliser for the Lisburn side.  Despite their growing confidence, Friends’ created few chances while the Academy were always a threat on the counterattack.  Indeed Philip Campbell’s effort saw the Friends’ keeper pull off a wonderful save when the ball seemed to be past him.

With only minutes remaining, the Academy won a penalty corner after great play by Mark Barlow.  Edward Rowe kept his cool to launch another pile-driver drag flick past the keeper to win the game for the Academy to coach Simon Jess’ delight.

The quarter-final draw will see RBAI visit Havelock Park on Wednesday 27th February for a 3pm hit off.

Squad: Scott Dale, Ryan Simms, Lewis Bingham, Charlie Rowe, Harry Lockhart, Mark Barlow, Lewis Groves, Edward Rowe, Philip Campbell, Luke McConnell, Chris Curry, Louis Rowe, Matthew McClimonds, Cody Large, Luke Watt.

Bannister Bowl success

Havelock Park was the setting for the first round of the Banbridge Academy Boys’ Hockey Under 13 Squad’s campaign in this season’s Bannister Bowl, as the talented Banbridge Academy squad was prepped and ready to take on Sullivan Upper.

The game started at a lively pace, with Bann making a positive and strong start.  Ben Walker made the first breakthrough early in the game.  After a great run down the right hand side of the pitch, he drew the opposition defenders along the base-line and neatly moved past them to slot the ball inside the net, giving the boys the lead.

Bann continued to move the ball well and dominated much of the possession in the first half.  Youngster Adam McKee made it 2-0 after 10 minutes when his forward presence in the circle saw him pounce on a loose ball and fire it into the goal.

Sullivan tried to work back to win possession but the Bann boys continued to press well and maintained their great work rate with Josh Brownlee showing his pace and skill up front.  There was great work from Jonah Lutton and with the boys passing the ball well, their efforts were rewarded by a driving shot from the energetic Matthew Stevenson who used his strength and power to good effect.

Just before half time, Bann got their fourth goal, with Daniel Reid making a super run into the D and drilling the ball past the Sullivan keeper.

The second half began with a steely Sullivan determined to make an impact.  Gaining more possession, the Sullivan boys worked hard, but a solid defensive trio of Joshua Cash, Caleb Briggs and Aaron Baxter worked hard to close down the Sullivan attacks.  The Bann midfield pressed well throughout, with fantastic performances from Matthew Spence, Jonny McCrum and Noah Lutton.  Bann keeper, Denver Golbey, had a solid performance, keeping any Sullivan attacks at bay.

As the game developed there was increased possession for Bann, with Elijah Carr working well in forward attacks.  After some lovely passing there was a tremendous strike by Lukas Moles as he slipped home the fifth goal past the Sullivan keeper.

A super start to the cup by an enthusiastic squad of young players.  In the next round, the boys travel to Campbell College on Friday 1st March for a 2:30pm hit off.

Squad: Denver Golbey, Calum Clement, Matthew Stevenson, Aaron Baxter, Caleb Briggs, Joshua Cash, Tom Brown, Noah Lutton, Matthew Spence, Lukas Moles, Ben Walker, Jonathan McCrum, Josh Brownlee, Adam McKee, Daniel Reid, Jonah Lutton, Elijah Carr.

Richardson starts with comfortable win

Tuesday 5th February

Richardson Cup Round 1

Banbridge Academy 4 – 1 Friends’

The U15s first round of the Richardson Cup was away to Friends’ School Lisburn. They started out well but the match was even early on. As the half developed, the Bann men started using their platform and quick sharp passes saw them dominate as the half wore on, leading to many chances. The first goal of the match was finished by Louis Rowe. Shortly after that a Cody large dragflick from a penalty corner beat the keeper and postmen, slotting tight in bottom right making the score 2-0.

In the second half the Academy started to switch the ball from side to side a lot more. This created more opportunities to score. The third goal was scored by Seb Best who beat the keeper down his left hand side. After a few more chances our final goal was scored by Nathan Reid tapping it in back post making the score 4-0. With not long left on the clock, Friends’ won a short corner which they scored with a reverse beating James Finley on the right hand side. About thirty seconds later the final whistle blew, making the final score 4-1 to Banbridge.

Team: James Finlay, Luke Watt, Charlie Rowe, Louis Rowe, Cameron McCombe, Seb Best, Nathan Reid, Jordan Nummy, Cody Large, Kian Bingham, Jack McFarland, Charlie Keery, Tommy Dobson, Matthew McKee, Spencer Collie, Ben Pollock
