All Irelands’ 2019

All-Ireland Schoolboys’ Hockey Tournament 2019

Banbridge Academy couldn’t repeat their feat from last season of reaching the final of the All-Ireland Schools’ when the competition took place last week in Dublin.

The campaign got off to the best possible start.  A goal from Ben Ingram and two from Edward Rowe saw the Academy defeat fellow Ulster school Methodist College 3-0.  Day 2 saw the Banbridge team face last years’ champions Newtown School from Waterford.  In a tough match on a cold morning at Kings’ Hospital School, a goal in each half, from Matthew McKee and Luke McConnell, was enough to set up a group decider against The High School Dublin.

With the whole school supporting the Dublin hosts on their home ground, it was The High School who went into a two nil lead.  Edward Rowe converted a penalty stroke after a deliberate infringement to pull one goal back for Banbridge, but the southern school secured the victory by three goals to one with another in the dying minutes.  This was a close encounter and tighter defending from the young Bann outfit could have seen a different outcome.  The High School would go on and win the tournament to become All-Ireland Champions for the first time, coming back from two goals down in the final to defeat St Andrews’ College in a shootout.

Banbridge then found themselves in the inaugural Herbie Sharman Trophy for the teams finishing second in their groups.  A disappointing first half on Day 3 saw the Bann side four nil down to Ashton School from Cork at half-time.  Some strong words rejuvenated the team and they came out fighting after the break.  Alas, three attempts hit the post to sum up the lack of luck going the Bann way, but Edward Rowe did pull one back when he scored the best goal of the match by gliding past three defenders before rocketed a drive high past the diving keeper.  A late Ashton penalty corner goal left the final score 5-1.

A disappointing end to a competition which had started so well but the majority of the squad will hope to be back again next year with a further years’ experience under their belts.

The full squad for the tournament:

Elliott Haw, James Finlay, Matthew McClimonds, Jamie McArdle, Luke Watt, Charlie Rowe, Mark Cowan, Lewis Groves, Edward Rowe, Harry Lockhart, Luke McConnell, Alex Jordan, Louis Rowe, Matthew McKee, Tommy Dobson, Cody Large, Seb Best, Ben Ingram

Coach: Simon Jess

Assistant Coach: John Clarke

All Irelands’ 2019 – Preview

All-Ireland Schoolboys’ Hockey Tournament 2019

Banbridge Academy 1st XI launch their campaign in the All-Ireland Schools’ Championships this Wednesday (23rd October).  The competition is this year being organised by Leinster Hockey and hosted by Wesley College, Dublin High School, Kings’ Hospital School, St. Andrew’s College and St. Columba’s College.

With a young squad containing only three Upper Sixth players, anticipation is none-the-less high as Simon Jess’ army will play group matches against Methodist College, Newtown School and Dublin High School.

The squad have had some great performances so far this season and they know they are capable of going all the way this season after falling at the final hurdle last year.  Under the captaincy of the experienced Ulster and Ireland U18 midfielder Edward Rowe, the team has a solid foundation on which to build.  In fact they have no less than six players in the squad who represented Ulster at either Under 16 or Under 18 level in the recent Interprovincial Championships.

The outfield defence has been constantly marshalled by Harry Lockhart and Charlie Rowe, and the addition of the determination of Jamie McArdle has provided extra strength on the left flank.  A powerful midfield of Louis Rowe, Matthew McClimonds, Mark Cowan and Lewis Groves would put the fear into any opposition, and with Luke McConnell and Alex Jordan upfront, the goals are starting to flow from all angles.

With the squad unbeaten in the All-Ireland qualifying campaign after comfortable victories over Grosvenor Grammar, RBAI and Campbell College, confidence has been further bolstered with a McCullough victory against Royal & Prior.  A pre-season victory over Regent House and tough battles with Wallace High and Friends’ School have meant the squad has been honed in every department.

Matches begin on Wednesday with a tie against Ulster rivals Methodist College, followed on Thursday by the double header against the last season’s conquerors Newtown School and then host school Dublin High.  The semi-finals are scheduled for Friday morning with the final on Friday afternoon at 2:30pm at St. Columba’s College.

The full squad for the tournament is:

Elliott Haw, James Finlay, Matthew McClimonds, Jamie McArdle, Luke Watt, Charlie Rowe, Mark Cowan, Lewis Groves, Edward Rowe, Harry Lockhart, Luke McConnell, Alex Jordan, Louis Rowe, Matthew McKee, Tommy Dobson, Cody Large, Seb Best, Ben Ingram

Coach: Simon Jess

Assistant Coach: John Clarke
